Pfunder was commissioned to plant 104 Lombardy poplars and elms between Salmon and Hall; his work set the precedent for these South Park Blocks to remain gorgeous and natural, “a cathedral of trees with a simple floor of grass”. Stretching through the heart of Downtown Portland, each park block features artwork, the most notable of which are bronze statues of two of the most influential leaders in American history: Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
